Day-wise Itenerary
Arrive at NJP/Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The journey takes you along winding roads, where the Teesta River flows gracefully beside you, and green valleys slowly rise into misty hills. Check into your hotel, rest, and soak in the peaceful mountain air. In the evening, step out for a relaxed stroll — Gangtok’s colorful markets, fluttering prayer flags, and friendly locals will make you feel instantly at home.
Evening Recommendation
Spend your evening at MG Marg, the lively pedestrian street of Gangtok. Try hot momos with thukpa, or relax in a café with views of the hills.
Today is an adventure into higher altitudes. Begin your drive to the shimmering Tsomgo Lake (12,400 ft), a sacred glacial lake surrounded by snow peaks. Its still waters, reflecting the skies, create a surreal and unforgettable sight. Further ahead, visit the famous Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, a place of deep reverence with stories of faith that locals hold close to their hearts. The journey itself is breathtaking, with every bend opening to new Himalayan vistas.
Photography Tip
Capture Tsomgo Lake’s reflection of the sky during sunrise or sunset for a magical photo opportunity.
This morning, leave Gangtok and set out for Lachung (8,700 ft). The road is lined with gushing waterfalls, mountain streams, and villages where prayer flags dance in the wind. Each turn reveals a view grander than the last, making the drive an experience in itself. On arrival in Lachung, check into your hotel or homestay. Nestled among snow peaks and apple orchards, this charming village feels like a postcard scene.
Travel Tip
The drive to Lachung can be steep and winding. Carry motion sickness medication and warm clothing for comfort.
Wake up early and set out to the enchanting Yumthang Valley — often called the Valley of Flowers. During spring, carpets of rhododendrons color the valley, while in winter, snow blankets everything in sparkling white. The river meanders through the valley, and the surrounding peaks seem to touch the sky. After this magical experience, drive onwards to Lachen (8,800 ft). This serene mountain village, with wooden houses and a rustic charm, is your base for the next day’s adventure to high-altitude wonders.
Night Sky Gazing
Step outside your lodge in Lachen to witness the starry Himalayan sky — clearer and brighter than anywhere else.
Start before dawn for one of the most memorable journeys of your life — the drive to Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft). As you ascend, the barren, rugged beauty of North Sikkim unfolds, a stark contrast to the lush valleys below. The lake itself is otherworldly — a shimmering turquoise jewel surrounded by snow-covered peaks, standing as one of the highest lakes in the world. The silence here is profound, and for many, it feels like standing at the edge of heaven. Return to Lachen for breakfast, then drive back to Gangtok by evening. The long journey is tiring but filled with awe-inspiring sights that stay with you forever.
Memorable Moment
Take a moment at Gurudongmar Lake to reflect on its spiritual significance and the raw beauty of nature surrounding you.
Your North Sikkim adventure comes to an end today. As you drive back, the mountains, rivers, and valleys seem to bid you farewell. From the charm of Gangtok to the raw wilderness of Lachung and Lachen, the memories of snow peaks, sacred lakes, and peaceful valleys will remain etched in your heart.
